Customs Temporarily Suspends Food Distribution Initiative After Tragic Incident

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced the temporary suspension of its food distribution initiative, following an unfortunate incident that occurred during a pilot exercise in Lagos state.

This is contained in a press statement issued to newsmen by the National Public Relations Officer of NCS, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada on Monday:

According to Wada, the initiative aimed at providing essential food items to Nigerians through the direct disposal of seized edible goods, commenced on Friday, 23 February 2024, at NCS Old Zonal Headquarters, Yaba, Lagos state, under the directive of the President.

He explained that the initial phase of the exercise proceeded smoothly, with over 5000 beneficiaries, including elderly individuals, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and other vulnerable Nigerians.

However, challenges emerged when the stock ran out, prompting the announcement of a continuation the following day.

According regrettably disclosed that a desperate crowd breached barricades in search of rice bags, leading to a stampede resulting in fatalities and injuries.

“The NCS extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families, pledging unwavering support and initiating an internal investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident” he said.

PRIME TIME NEWS gathered that in response to the tragic outcome, the NCS has suspended the food disposal exercise until a thorough understanding of the situation is reached.

The service aims to implement more robust and comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and welfare of Nigerians in future initiatives, acknowledging the importance of preventive measures in all operations.

Abdullahi Maiwada however conveyed the service’s commitment to addressing challenges in the nation’s food security and expressed gratitude for the understanding and cooperation of all Nigerians during this difficult time.
