CYNAPC Warns Against Subversion, Urges Youth to Uphold Democracy on June 12
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Coalition of Northern Youth for the All Progressives Congress (CYNAPC) has issued a statement commemorating June 12 and cautioning against what it describes as growing threats to the nation’s democratic stability.
The group paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, describing him as the “undisputed hero” of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose legacy represents sacrifice, justice, and commitment to democratic ideals. However, it expressed concern over attempts by some former activists particularly ex-student leaders to distort Abiola’s legacy in pursuit of divisive political agendas.
This was contained in a statement signed by Abdulhameed Musa Abdullahi, Secretary-General of the Coalition of Northern Youth for APC (CYNAPC), and released to newsmen today.
CYNAPC reaffirmed its stance against any anti-democratic movements, stating that Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic transitions since 1999, though not perfect, are evidence of steady progress. It stressed that such progress must be advanced through lawful and democratic means not through rebellion or subversion.
The group condemned recent remarks by Prof. Pat Utomi and his associates regarding the establishment of a “shadow government,” describing the idea as unconstitutional and a direct threat to national sovereignty. “Nigeria is not a banana republic,” the group warned.
Further condemnation was directed at a former military officer, Gen. Williams, whose recent calls for the dissolution of national security agencies the DSS and NIA were labeled “reckless” and “a threat to national security.” CYNAPC called for a thorough investigation into his statements and affiliations.
The group also raised alarm over planned protests tagged “End Bad Governance,” reportedly scheduled for June 12 in several states. According to CYNAPC, these protests are backed by “failed political actors and foreign interests” aiming to destabilize the country after losing at the polls.
“Leadership is not seized through protests or propaganda. Leadership is earned through the constitutional will of the people,” the statement emphasized.
CYNAPC urged security agencies, the judiciary, and other national institutions to take immediate action against all subversive efforts, including illegal protests and attempts to establish parallel structures.
To Nigerian youth, the group issued a clear warning: “Do not allow yourselves to be used as pawns by disgruntled elites seeking to hijack your energy for selfish goals. Nigeria’s future lies in democratic processes, unity, and peace not sabotage.”
The coalition concluded by reiterating its readiness to resist any individuals or groups attempting to derail Nigeria’s democratic progress.
