Daurama Foundation Makes Strides in Menstrual Hygiene Awareness on World Menstrual Hygiene Day
Dr. Samira Buhari and her Daurama Foundation marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2024 by empowering hundreds of girls with knowledge and essential supplies.
The global theme this year, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” emphasizes the collective effort to break the stigma around menstruation and ensure all girls have access to necessary resources.
The Daurama Foundation team reached over 500 young girls at the JSS Secondary School, Wuse, Zone 3, Abuja. They provided educational sessions on menstrual health and hygiene, alongside distributing sanitary pads, detergents, tissues, and exercise books.
Dr. Buhari emphasized the importance of menstrual health management, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals for gender equality, education, and well-being. “Every month, billions menstruate,” she said. “Ensuring access to sanitary products is crucial for girls in Nigeria to manage their periods safely and hygienically.”
The school principal, Mrs. Adebimpe Ojo, commended the foundation’s efforts. “The Daurama Foundation’s visit empowered our students with knowledge and essential supplies,” she said. “This is a significant step towards ensuring our girls can attend school with confidence.”
A student, Emmanuel Perfection, expressed her gratitude. “Learning about menstrual health and receiving these sanitary pads has been very helpful,” she said. “I feel more prepared now.”
The Daurama Foundation also donated 500 sanitary pads to the WASH program in Borno State, contributing to improved WASH standards in the region.
As the movement against period poverty marks a decade, the Daurama Foundation remains a champion for menstrual hygiene management and awareness in Nigeria. Their commitment ensures talking about periods becomes normal and no girl misses out on education due to lack of sanitary products.
