By Abdullahi Yusuf
Some Stakeholders in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State have commended the State Government over its current efforts to revive education in the state, describing the measures as “bold and timely.”
The State Government had declared a State of Emergency on education in order to address the decay in the sector and restore it to the path of development.
They made the commendation when a team of journalists whom were on an assessment tour of education projects executed by the State Government, paid a visit to the area on Tuesday.
“The ongoing implementation of State of Emergency in the education sector by the State Government is a welcome development as it will address the decay in the sector,”the stakeholders said.
Among them is the village head of Kumbotso,
Aminu Iliyasu, who particularly commended the construction of one-storey block of four classrooms for primary schools across the 44 local government areas of the state.
Iliyasu, who is also the Sarkin Fulani Dagacin Kumbotso, lauded the provision of furniture and instructional materials and deployment of teachers to primary schools in the state.
He advised the government to vigorously pursue the implementation of the State of Emergency initiative so as to restore the lost glory of education in the state.
He, however, noted that poverty and hunger are distracting primary school pupils from their studies in the area.
He told the visiting newsmen at his palace that many of the pupils stray away from school and indulge in petty trading and other menial jobs.
According to him,the pupils resort to the menial pursuits because their parents cannot provide adequate care for them and other members of their respective families.
“Because of the prevailing poverty and hunger in the country, many of the pupils have to indulge in petty trading and other menial jobs so as to complement their families’ income,” he said.
In this situation, the village head said, the parents find it difficult to make material contribution to the State Government’s efforts to revamp education in the state.
He appealed to the Federal Government to deploy measures that would ease the current economic hardships in the country so as to enable parents and guardians to properly take care of their children’s education and other basic needs.
On his part, the Headmaster of Kumbotso Special Primary School, Shuaibu Idris, commended the State Government for its provision of more classrooms, furniture and teaching aides to the school.
The gesture,Idris said, would boost teaching and learning in the school, but appealed to the State Government to deploy more of such infrastructure to the school.
He, however, complained about lack of perimeter fencing in the school which he said had exposed it to thieves and trespassers.
According to him,the absence of such facility has also caused pupils to be straying away during school hours, which he said is not good for their education.
