FAAN Clarifies, Defends Relocation Decision from Abuja to Lagos
In response to public inquiries, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a press release today, reaffirming its decision to relocate the corporate headquarters from Abuja to its original base in Lagos. The directive came from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo.
Obiageli Orah (Mrs.), Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, in a press release, clarified that the decision by FAAN to move the headquarters was reached after extensive consultations with stakeholders, including unions. The Authority emphasized that the relocation was deemed necessary for several reasons.
Firstly, those affected by the initial move to Abuja have since returned to Lagos, as there was insufficient office space in the capital city. FAAN criticized the initial decision to move the headquarters without adequate facilities in Abuja, leading to the practical challenges faced by the staff.
Secondly, the Authority highlighted the financial imprudence of continuing to pay Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) to staff technically working out of station in Lagos while officially posted to Abuja. The Minister aimed to halt this perceived waste of public resources.
FAAN also presented the option of abandoning the old building in Lagos and renting office space in Abuja, a move deemed less favorable given the significant operational activities in Lagos.
The Minister, stakeholders, and FAAN collectively opted to preserve resources and manage the existing Lagos facility until concessionaires can build suitable offices in both cities.
The Minister disclosed plans to engage concessionaires for the construction of modern offices in Lagos and Abuja, and until then, the Authority will maintain its old building in Lagos, accommodating Directors and senior officials.
The press release assured the public that operations in Abuja remained fully operational, with no scaling down. FAAN emphasized its commitment to act in the best interest of the public and the country, and the Minister’s dedication to decisions beneficial to the nation, regardless of ethnic or sectional sentiments.
The Authority concluded by expressing gratitude and confidence in the Minister’s commitment to prudent financial management and decision-making for the betterment of Nigeria.
