The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting public awareness and safety as Nigeria advances its transition to a natural gas-powered economy.

Fisola Adurogbangba on behalf of Director, Public Relations and Protocol of the Ministry disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen.

Speaking at the Gas Safety Conference 2025, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation Alhaji Mohammed Idris commended Fleissen Events and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for organising the event with the theme: “Transitioning to a Natural Gas-Powered Economy: Safety as a Shared Responsibility.”

Highlighting the significance of the theme, he noted that safety in Nigeria’s energy transition goes beyond technical regulation to include public knowledge, behaviour, beliefs, and trust.

“Safety is not just about regulations and technical standards; it is also about what people know, how they behave, what they believe, and who they trust,” he stated.

He assured the organisers that the Ministry remains dedicated to culturally sensitive public information campaigns that support national development, particularly in the areas of energy transition and citizen safety.

Describing the conference as a crucial national platform, he praised its role in fostering dialogue, enhancing regulatory awareness, and improving stakeholder and media collaboration on gas safety matters.

The Minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ogbodo Chinasa Nnam, stressed the importance of combating misinformation and fear related to gas use, pointing out that accurate and timely information is essential to reduce risks and encourage the safe adoption of gas for household, industrial, and transportation purposes.

“Safety is not the sole responsibility of regulators or industry operators; it is a shared mandate involving government, media, civil society, traditional institutions, and every Nigerian citizen,” he emphasised.

The Chairman of the Gas Safety Conference, Osten Olorunsola, led stakeholders present in endorsing the National Gas Safety Declaration, while pointing out that it is important for us as Nigerians to take the Safety of the abundance of gas available in Nigeria seriously.

In attendance were the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), represented by Dr Mustapha Lamorde, Executive Director, NMDPRA, representatives from NEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, the Police, Standard Organisation of Nigeria and other notable stakeholders in the industry.

The Gas Safety Conference 2025 continues with discussions on safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and innovations supporting Nigeria’s natural gas sector.
