FG Condemns Recent Military Coup in Guinea-Bissau

The Federal Government has condemned the recent unconstitutional change of government in Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
This was revealed in a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Thursday.
According to Imomotimi, the FG in its strongest possible terms condemns this act of military insurrection which undermines democratic progress not only in Guinea-Bissau but the West African sub-region.
“The coup d’Ă©tat, represents a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance which explicitly rejects any ascension to power through unconstitutional means” he said
He added that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and calls for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order as well as the safety and security of all those involved.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria, urges all actors involved to exercise utmost restraint, prioritise peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people of Guinea Bissau as expressed through their ballots and the peaceful conclusion of the election with the announcement of results by the electoral management body” he added
He concludes that Nigeria as a key member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union (AU) will work closely with regional and international partners taking all necessary measures to ensure a swift return to normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau Bissau while reaffirming Nigeria’s unwavering commitments to democracy,peace and stability across Africa.
