FG distributes relief materials to 22,658 flood victims in Kano
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced the commencement of the distribution of relief materials to assist 22,658 households affected by devastating floods last year (2022) in Kano.
The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s Special National Economic Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI) Programme, aimed at supporting disaster victims and vulnerable populations across the country.
The distribution event took place at the Kano State Grain Store on Maganda Road, Nassarawa Local Government Area, where the Governor’s Deputy, Comr. Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo represented him.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by Press Secretary to Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu on Saturday.
The relief effort is a collaboration between the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to address the challenges arising from the flood disaster.
Governor Abba revealed that the distribution strategy has been carefully devised, allocating relief to 979 households in each of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) affected by the floods. Notably, Kano Municipal and Tarauni LGAs received 1520 households each.
“This comprehensive initiative spans across the three Senatorial zones and covers 22 LGAs, including Tudun Wada, Karaye, Rogo, Bebeji, Kiru, Garko, Sumaila, Gaya, Kano Municipal, Madobi, Kura, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Gezewa, Gwarzo, Danbatta, Shanono, Bichi, Tsanyawa, Rimin Gado, Kabo, and Dawakin”
“The relief distribution encompasses various forms of assistance to help families rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Among the items to be distributed are rice seedlings (3624), maize seedlings (3624), groundnut seedlings (3264), 5817 food items, 2404 grinding machines, and 2406 sewing machines. Beneficiaries of seedlings will also receive essential tools such as sprayers or water pumping machines to support their agricultural activities” the Governor revealed.
Governor Kabir emphasized that the distribution process follows a specific pattern to cater to the varying needs of different LGAs. Kano Municipal and Tarauni, characterized by non-agrarian societies, will primarily receive food, non-food items, and empowerment materials.
Adding that on the other hand, the remaining 20 LGAs, with their agricultural backgrounds, will be provided with a comprehensive aid package.
He further explained the distribution is being conducted meticulously in phases, with the first phase already underway. This phase includes LGAs such as Madobi, Gezawa, Garko, Rimin Gado, Sumaila, Karaye, Rogo, Kura, Shanono, and Tsanyawa.
Recall the catastrophic 2022 flood that wreaked havoc in Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, was deemed the worst in Nigeria’s history, leaving a trail of destruction, claiming lives, obliterating valuable properties worth billions of naira, damaging vital infrastructure, and displacing countless families.
