FG Inaugurates Building Code Advisory Committee, Reaffirms Commitment to Safer, Sustainable Structures

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all buildings in the country adhere to global standards of safety, durability, and sustainability.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, gave the assurance on Thursday while inaugurating the National Building Code Advisory Committee at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Describing the National Building Code as a vital regulatory tool, the minister said it provides minimum standards for pre-design, construction, and post-construction processes.

“The National Building Code is essential for addressing challenges such as unplanned urban settlements, frequent building collapses, and the use of untested materials and unqualified personnel,” Ata said. “We are determined to ensure that every Nigerian home, office, school, hospital, and place of assembly is built to specifications that guarantee safety, durability, and sustainability.”

He urged members of the committee to bring professionalism, integrity, and patriotism to their work, noting that their efforts would be key to raising building standards across the country.

Earlier, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Shuaibu Lamido Belgore, represented by Mr. Temitope Samuel, stressed the importance of standardized building practices in safeguarding lives and property, boosting investor confidence, and enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, was also commended for driving the agenda of affordable housing while maintaining safety and quality benchmarks.

According to the ministry, the formation of the advisory committee reflects the government’s determination to align Nigeria’s construction industry with international best practices, a move expected to create a safer built environment and opportunities for youth involvement.
