In commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day 2023, the Fiscal Discipline and Development Advocacy Centre (FIDAC) in collaboration with Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) project hosted a stakeholders workshop urging Kano State to adopt the Proceeds of Crime Law (2022).
The event held on Thursday at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano was themed “Uniting the World Against Corruption,” which highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in managing recovered assets by anti-corruption agencies.
Dr. Abdussalam Kani, Executive Director of FIDAC, while fielding questions from newsmen during the event, emphasized the urgency for Kano to adopt the law, currently absent despite the existence of the Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission (PCACC) since 2010.
Dr. Kani lamented the detrimental impact of corruption on Kano’s economy, citing rising poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. He attributed these challenges to public funds being siphoned for personal gain by officials.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Emmanuel Uche, Anti-Corruption Programme Manager for RoLAC, pledged the EU’s continued support to Nigeria’s fight against corruption. He acknowledged the enormity of the challenge, stating it will be a long and difficult process.
Dr. Uche outlined RoLAC’s objectives, including improving access to justice, promoting transparency and accountability in government institutions, and ensuring accountability in key sectors.
He commended Kano’s leadership in combating corruption and pledged continuous support.
“We will support Kano State to ensure transparency and accountability are implemented across government agencies so that the people can feel the impact of good governance,” Dr. Uche stated.
He concluded the event with a message of hope for the future, acknowledging the challenges faced by his generation but expressing optimism for a brighter tomorrow.
