Fighting Desertification: NAGGW Launches Yobe Tree Planting Initiative

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) has launched the planting of 5 million date palm seedling and other assorted economic trees in maimalari community of Yusufari local government area of Yobe state.
Speaking during the flagging-off ceremony on Sunday, the Director General, NAGGW, Alhaji Saleh Abubakar said, the tree planting exercise is a continuation of the activities marking the agency’s 10th anniversary.
He stated that,the tree planting distributed across the 11 frontline states of the Great Green Wall, which are severely affected by land degradation caused by desert encroachment to includes; Borno,Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa,Gombe, Bauchi,Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Adamawa states.
He explained, the date palm seedlings and other economic trees once matured and harvested,would significantly boost economic activities in the state.
He further revealed that the initiative will not only help tackle the effects of climate change but also boost livelihoods and food security across affected communities.
Earlier in his remarks, Yobe state Commissioner of Environment, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa explained the initiative by NAGGW will addressed the myriad of ecological challenges facing the frontline states of the county.
He noted that, Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni has been making a lot of activities geared towards addressing the state’s ecological challenges induced by the global phenomenon of climate change in the state.
