Flooding: Houses Collapse, Kill 20, Displace 3,000 in Gashua, Yobe

From Sani Gazas Chinade, Damaturu

In the past two weeks, 20 people have been confirmed dead in Gashua, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State, due to house collapses caused by heavy rainfall.

The Executive Chairman of the local government area, Babagana Ibrahim, stated that many residents are now seeking refuge in three designated camps.

According to Ibrahim, the government is providing essential needs such as food, medical care, hygiene kits, and clean drinking water to the displaced persons to prevent disease outbreaks.

He appealed for additional support from the federal government and donor agencies, citing the rising number of displaced persons, now at approximately 3,000.

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage, particularly to mud houses, with four fatalities reported in Gashua this morning alone.

The two federal roads leading to Gashua have been inaccessible for the past ten days, hindering humanitarian workers’ response to the displaced persons’ needs.

The Chairman has directed occupants of mud houses to vacate immediately to prevent further casualties from the flood.
