Galambi: We Backed Rivers State Emergency to Safeguard Democracy, Citizens

By Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna

Hon. Yusuf Shittu Galambi, representing Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, has dismissed allegations that members of the National Assembly were bribed to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Speaking amid ongoing controversy, Galambi clarified in a statement on Saturday that lawmakers were neither induced nor coerced but acted in the best interest of democracy and the people of Rivers State.

According to him, the decision was motivated by a commitment to preserving democratic institutions, fostering political stability, and ensuring peace in the state.

“I was surprised by media reports spreading falsehoods that we were bribed or pressured to support the President’s decision in Rivers State. The majority of us backed the move to protect democracy and even to safeguard Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who faces political challenges that could lead to his impeachment,” he stated.

Galambi emphasized that the National Assembly played a crucial role in urging President Tinubu to form a reconciliation committee of eminent Nigerians to resolve the crisis before the six-month emergency rule expires.

“Contrary to the emotional reactions from opposition groups and civil society, we in the Assembly approached the issue with patriotism, seeking political cohesion and peace to protect democracy, the people, the governor, and the state assembly,” he added.

He further called on Nigerians to support the President’s efforts in resolving the crisis through dialogue and unity.

“I urge all well-meaning Nigerians to allow Mr. President to explore the best possible solutions to these challenges through peaceful dialogue,” Galambi concluded.
