Gateway Games 2025: Adama and Timmy Win Kano State’s First Five Medals at National Sports Festival

Kano State has opened its medal tally at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games 2025, with an impressive performance from its female weightlifters.

The duo of Jegede Timmy and Adama Anyinba secured the first five medals for the state, bringing home a total of two silver and three bronze medals.

Competing in the 55kg category, Jegede Timmy won two silver and one bronze medal, while Adama Anyinba, in the 49kg category, clinched two bronze medals — all in the women’s weightlifting events.

In another development, the Kano State football team has qualified for the quarter-final stage after winning two group matches. They defeated Kwara State 2-1 and later beat Ondo State 3-0 via a walkover in Group A, held at the Remo Stars Stadium.

With two victories and six points, Team Kano currently tops the group, followed by Lagos State, which sits second with three points from one match.

Speaking to journalists after the medal events, Coach Ahmad Aliyu expressed optimism about Team Kano’s prospects. “Our athletes are determined and will redouble their efforts to win gold medals for Kano State,” he said.

Also reacting, the Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Ibrahim Umar Fagge, commended the achievements of Adama Anyinba and Jegede Timmy, describing them as a motivation for other athletes representing the state in Abeokuta.

“Our athletes and their coaches are ready to give their best at this year’s games,” Fagge added.
