Gidan Yanci fellows join TJ&GP to push for youth-centered policies in Kano

The Tax Justice and Governance Platform (TJ&GP) Kano Chapter conducted an Advocacy visit along with stakeholders and fellows from the Gidan Yanci program, to address tax-related issues in the state.

They also advocated for gender-responsive and youth-centered budgetary allocations and policies in Kano.

The platform emphasized the need to address the specific challenges faced by Kano’s youth, particularly in human capital development, socio-economic opportunities, and inclusion in governance.

Dr. Muhammad Mustapha Yahaya, Executive Director of Dispute Resolution & Development Initiative (formerly DAG), led the delegation that met with Kano State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Alh. Musa Suleiman Shanono.

Dr. Yahaya highlighted the TJ&GP’s commitment to promoting fair and equitable tax practices in Kano.

He presented a policy brief to the commissioner, outlining the current tax’s strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. 

The brief included proposed short, medium, and long-term reforms for strengthening tax administration.

“We presented recommendations for policymakers to review and adopt, in order to improve tax collection in the state,” the ED added.

The Commissioner while speaking welcomed the initiative.

He pledged to present the brief to the State Executive Council for consideration. 

The commissioner also encouraged future collaboration with the organisations.

The delegation in related development visited Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi.

Commissioner Dederi commended the TJ&GP’s efforts and expressed his ministry’s support in shaping legal frameworks promoting responsible fiscal management, transparency, and equitable taxation.

Both commissioners received policy briefs outlining the current tax system and proposing reforms.

The Gidan Yanci, a program fellowship, equips young citizen with the skills and mentorship needed to push for democratic reforms. 

Their focus on civic engagement aligns with the TJ&GP’s mission to promote fair and equitable tax practices.
