Gidan Yanci Seeks Partnership with KNSG to Deepen Democratic Reforms

By Mustapha Salisu

In a bid to promote inclusive governance and political participation, Gidan Yanci, a non-governmental organization, has introduced its initiative seeking to deepen democratic reforms to Kano State Government.

The 2nd cohort of Gidan Yanci fellowship, during an advocacy visit to Kano State Deputy Governor’s Spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, on Tuesday, introduced the initiative and sought partnership to boost political participation, governance reforms, and empowerment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Kano State.

During the meeting, Hadiza Yusuf, a fellow of Gidan Yanci, highlighted the low participation of women in politics and sought ways to encourage their involvement.

She emphasized the need for the government to fulfill its campaign promises, particularly in health and education.

“The initiative focuses on three thematic areas: political participation, governance reforms, and freedom of expression,” Hadiza revealed.

Responding, the Spokesperson, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, expressed support for the initiative, noting that women’s participation is crucial for the progress of the state.

He mentioned that the administration has women in key positions, including commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants, special reporters among others.

He also emphasized the readiness to partner with Gidan Yanci to empower PWDs and sensitize the public against hate speech. “Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s led administration doesn’t support hate speech in all manners,” Ibrahim noted.

Garba further stated that the newly established Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs will cater to the needs of PWDs in the state, and INEC is responsible for coordinating PWDs’ role in the election process.

He also commended Gidan Yanci for their efforts in promoting political participation and governance reforms as well as freedom of expression in the state.

The Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary presented a calendar to the fellows.

PRIME TIME NEWS reports that the partnership between Gidan Yanci and Kano State Government aims to deepen democratic reforms and promote inclusive governance in the state, and the meeting ended with a commitment to work together to achieve this goal.
