Global Handwashing Day: Jigawa First Lady Advocates for Routine Handwashing Habit

The wife of governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, has urged women in the state to make handwashing a routine habit.

Hajiya Hadiza made the call on Wednesday while speaking at the 2024 Global Handwashing Day marked at Gandu village area Dutse Jigawa state.

The first lady who was represented by Dr Aminu Dauda, the Special Advisor to the governor on Women Affairs, said the gesture is to prevent the spread of infectious disease like diarrhea, cholera and respiratory infections.

Hajiya Hadiza, explained that when health remains a top priority, the sample act of regular hand wandwshing has the power to save lives.

She noted that despite the importance of handwashing, many residents still don’t have access to clean water or facilities to practice proper hygiene.

“The significance of handwashing with soap cannot be overstated. It is one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

“This is why today, as we celebrate the Global Handwashing Day, we are reminded of the critical need to keep reinforcing this message, particularly in our schools, homes and public spaces.

“Teaching our children and communities about the importance of hand hygiene is a responsibility that we all share, and its a message we must continue to promote, not just today but everyday,” the first lady said.

According to her, the state government remains fully committed to improving the living standard of the citizens.

“This administration has made significant strides in transforming the state, ensuring access to essential services like clean water and sanitation, who are fundamental to good hygiene practices.

“Through various interventions, the government continues to expand water projects across the state, providing clean and safe water to underserved communities, schools and healthcare centres,” Umar added.

Also, Mr Abubakar Sidi, the Managing Director of Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) in the state, noted that ninety percent cent of diseases are due to improper handwashing.

Sidi therefore, advised the women to ensure that they wash their hands properly before breastfeeding their babies.

He also promised the Gandu community that the agent would provide solar-powered in the area to enhace access to clean water.

In his remarks, the Director Hygiene Promotion in the agency, Mr Aliyu Mustapfa, urged the residents to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene in order to protect themselves from infectious diseases.

Mustafa also demonstrated to the how to properly wash their hands with soap and running water.
