Gombe Unveils Scholarship, School Grants to Promote Girls’ Education

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has flagged off the disbursement of School Improvement Grants (SIGs) and the AGILE Girls’ Scholarship Programme designed to enhance school infrastructure and promote girls’ education across Gombe State.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at Custodian Hotel, Gombe, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming the education sector, describing education as the bedrock of human capital development and social progress.
He emphasized that the prosperity of any society depends largely on the quality of education its children receive, particularly girls.
“When you educate a girl, you educate a family, a community, and a nation,” Governor Yahaya stated. “This initiative reflects our determination to eliminate barriers that hinder girls from accessing education in Gombe State.”
The governor commended the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project Implementation Unit for partnering with the state to strengthen inclusive learning.
He assured that his administration would sustain the collaboration to ensure the full success of the programme.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aishatu Umar Maigari, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the ongoing educational reforms under Governor Yahaya’s leadership.
She explained that the grants would support the upgrading of school facilities, improve the learning environment, and enhance accountability through active School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs).
Dr. Maigari urged SBMCs to ensure transparent and effective use of the funds, while encouraging beneficiaries to make the best use of the scholarship opportunity.
“The ATM cards you receive today are more than financial aid they are a symbol of confidence in your potential and determination to succeed,” she said.
Also speaking, the AGILE Project Coordinator, Dr. Amina Haruna Abdul, revealed that thousands of girls in both junior and senior secondary schools across the state would benefit from the scholarships, which aim to remove financial and social obstacles to education.
She noted that the School Improvement Grants would also help schools create safer and more conducive learning environments for all students.
Dr. Abdul lauded Governor Yahaya’s visionary leadership and unwavering support for education, noting that his administration’s initiatives have rekindled hope and ambition among young girls across Gombe State.
