Goni of Gombe Advocates Ideological Reforms, Unity for Stronger Democracy

From Abubakar Rabilu, Gombe

The Goni of Gombe, Dr. Auwal Abdullahi Gafakan Akko, has called on Nigerian political parties to rebuild their ideological foundations and prioritize unity as essential steps toward strengthening the nation’s democracy.

In an exclusive interview with journalists in Gombe, Dr. Gafakan emphasized that skilled leadership and ethical governance are pivotal for addressing Nigeria’s pressing political challenges. He urged political actors to move beyond self-serving ambitions and focus on strategies that foster national development.

“Nigerian political parties must reconnect with their ideological roots to establish a solid framework for uniting members and effectively tackling the nation’s needs,” Dr. Gafakan stated.

He highlighted how the lack of visionary leadership and ethical governance has exacerbated the country’s political instability, adding that prioritizing competence over favoritism is critical for progress.

“Leadership should be based on merit and capacity, not favoritism or personal interests. Only then can we prioritize the needs of the nation,” he said.

The traditional ruler also called for comprehensive reforms in political competition, urging politicians to prioritize national development over personal gain. “True progress requires a shift in our political mindset. The nation’s growth must always come before individual ambition,” he noted.

Dr. Gafakan further stressed the importance of fostering political stability and inclusivity, urging leaders to implement policies that promote unity among Nigeria’s diverse populations.

He advised political parties to train their members on ideological principles that emphasize accountability, public service, and unity, noting that these values are indispensable for building a cohesive and prosperous nation.
