The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has reminded that the suspension of broadcast licences falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), following the recent action by the Niger State Government against Badegi FM, a radio station in Minna.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation said, the ministry had noted concerns raised by media stakeholders over the action against the privately-owned station.
According to the statement, the Ministry welcomed the state government’s decision to formally report its allegations of unethical conduct to the NBC for further consideration.
Recall PRIME TIME NEWS earlier reported that, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the suspension of Badegi FM during an expanded APC caucus meeting in Minna on August 1, alleging incitement and unethical broadcasting by the station.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.
While acknowledging the concerns expressed, the Minister appealed for calm, assuring that “the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue in a fair and impartial manner.”
