In a remarkable boost to media capacity, Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has presented brand-new laptops to 100 journalists who participated in a capacity-building workshop organized by the state government in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day workshop held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, the Governor—represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, mni—charged journalists to prioritize truth, accuracy, and professionalism in their reportage.
Governor Buni cautioned against sensationalism and inflammatory reporting, warning that such practices could undermine public peace and erode the social harmony that Yobe State has painstakingly restored over the years.
“This gesture is not just about providing tools; it is a tangible investment in empowering you to carry out your noble responsibility with greater efficiency and integrity,” the Governor said.
“Your words have immense power. In this era of rapidly evolving information technology, I urge you to wield your pens and these laptops with a strong sense of responsibility. Prioritizing truth and accuracy is not only a professional duty, but also a vital contribution to sustaining our hard-won peace.”
Reflecting on the state’s journey through insurgency and recovery, the Governor noted that the progress made in rebuilding Yobe places an even greater responsibility on journalists to report with fairness and accuracy.
Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, reaffirmed the Buni administration’s unwavering commitment to inclusive and broad-based socio-economic development anchored on the guiding principle of continuity, consolidation, and innovation.
The workshop featured paper presentations, practical sessions, and interactive discussions designed to equip participants with modern tools and sharpen their professional ethics in line with global best practices.
Governor Buni’s closing remarks and his generous gift to the participants underscore the administration’s recognition of the media as a critical partner in strengthening transparency, accountability, peace, and development in Yobe State.
