Gov. Namadi Flags Off Dry Season Rice Programme, Targets 3.6m Metric Tonnes

From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

The Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi, on Saturday launched the Jigawa Rice Value Chain Development Programme and officially flagged off the 2025 Dry Season Rice Production Programme.

Speaking at the event, Governor Namadi emphasized that the initiative is a key component of his administration’s commitment to achieving food security, boosting agricultural productivity, and empowering farmers across the state.

“We have set an ambitious target of producing 3.6 million metric tonnes of rice annually. I am confident that with the dedication of our farmers, the support of stakeholders, and effective partnerships, this goal is within reach,” he stated.

The governor disclosed that, for the current dry season alone, over 58,500 farmers across 27 local government areas will cultivate more than 130,000 hectares of land. These farmers will use improved seed varieties and modern farming techniques, including fertilization, weed control, and irrigation.

He further noted that the initiative goes beyond increasing output. “Through the Rice Value Chain Development Project, we are working towards a complete transformation of rice production in Jigawa. This includes full mechanization, development of processing hubs, and enhanced access to both local and international markets,” he added.

Governor Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to positioning Jigawa as Nigeria’s leading rice producer and a hub for agribusiness and rural prosperity. He urged farmers to take full advantage of the programme and assured them of the continuity and sustainability of policies designed to ensure long-term success.

“Together, we will build a stronger, self-reliant Jigawa driven by agricultural growth and sustainable community development,” he said.
