A group, Northern Youth Awareness Council, has distanced itself from the request sent to the State House of Assembly by the Association of Kano Electorates(Kungiyar Yan Dangwale) asking the legislature to dissolve the four new Emirates in the state.
“We are not a party to the request by the Kano Electorates to the Kano State House of Assembly calling for the dissolution of our Emirates, because it is highly unfortunate as it is retrogressive,” the Council told a press conference at the NUJ Press Centre,Kano, on Monday.
The Council which spoke through its Chairman, Amb.Mahmud Sa’id,said the creation of four additional Emirates had brought the people closer to their respective Emirs, “thereby engendering good governance in the affected areas.”
It said all the five Emirates in the state – Kano,Gaya,Rano,Karaye and Bichi should be left intact as their existence predates the advent of the colonial whites, preserving the culture and traditions of the people.
“We, therefore, urge the Assembly to reject the request of the Kano Electorates, and indeed, any other groups that are clamouring for the dissolution of the Emirates, in the interest of progress and development of the state,” the group said.
It urged fellow associations, especially those of the youths, to focus more on promoting issues that would assist government in delivering good governance to the people”rather than agitating for things that will breed chaos in the society.”
“It should be noted that associations and unions are formed for the peace, progress and development of the society, and not for destructive purposes.
“We urge the good people of Kano State to continue to cooperate and support the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and our five Emirs for peace, tranquility and progress to continue to thrive in our state,” the Council added.
