Group Kicks Against Recycling as a Solution To Plastic Crises

The Centre for Earth Works (CFEW) has kicked against recycling of plastic waste as a solution to Plastic crises in the country.
The Youth Co-chair and Research Associate of CFEW, Stanley Okwara stated this on Thursday during a Press conference in Jos also called for the reduction in the production of plastic in Nigeria.
He explained that CFEW is a research driven None Governmental Organization (NGO) working to empower communities abaut sustainable strategies of solving environment problems.
Okwara maintained that due to addition of toxic plastic chemicals both the process chemicals and variety of process contaminants , recycling plastics now means recycling of toxic chemicals stressing that the process therefore constitute a false solution.
According to him, three things are urgently needed to protect the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, which includes, the intentional use of toxic chemicals in Plastic needs to be prevented, the unintentional presence of toxic chemicals in plastics needs to be prevented.
He further said there is need to include the mandatory requirements for making information abaut chemicals content of plastic and their hazard publicly available and accessible.
He argued that the global trade chemicals, plastic and plastic waste necessitated International regulations, including leveraging years existing agreement like Stockholm and Basel conventions along with international labor and health resolutions.
Okwara added that the NGO is dedicated to building capacities and providing solutions to pressing environmental issues through youth and women empowerment and public education adding that their works is guided by these core values, cohesiveness, innovation, sustainability, integrity and accountability.
