By Mustapha Salisu
Kano journalist Hannatu Suleiman Abba has been appointed as the Coordinator of the Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative, in recognition of her dedication to marginalized groups and her efforts to promote inclusion and protection in communities.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Malam Sani Muhammad, emphasized the challenges faced by vulnerable groups in Kano State. He cited a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) survey revealing high numbers of Almajiris, vulnerable women, persons with disabilities, and out-of-school children struggling to survive on the streets.
Malam Sani highlighted the organization’s demand-driven approach to addressing these issues and applauded the recent appointment of Hajiya Amina Abdullahi as Commissioner for Women, Children, and Persons with Disabilities. He described the move as a significant step toward establishing the People with Disability Commission and implementing social protection policies, which are vital for advancing advocacy efforts.
The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative has been actively involved in various activities, including providing support for students with disabilities, empowering vulnerable groups, distributing sanitary materials to special schools, and offering medical assistance to disadvantaged communities in Kano. These programs have been made possible through support from the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation.
Additionally, Alfathana Dahiru Sarina has been named Deputy Coordinator, a recognition of his extensive advocacy for the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative, founded in 2022, was officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission on November 30, 2022.
