Have Fear of God, Stop Hiking Prices on Goods Still in Stock, Says Kantin Kwari’s MD to Marketers

By Mustapha Salisu

The Managing Director of Kantin Kwari Textile Market in Kano, Alh. Hamisu Sa’ad Dogon Nama, has urged marketers to have the fear of Allah Almighty and refrain from increasing prices on old goods still in stock. He emphasized that this practice worsens the existing economic hardships in the country.

During an interactive session with journalists in his office on Wednesday, Dogon Nama described the habit as inhuman and lacking pity for the larger populace. He acknowledged that the unstable market prices are due to the fluctuating dollar in the foreign exchange market and rising fuel prices.

However, he stressed, “It is not justified for you as a marketer to increase prices of goods still in stock just because you experience changes in the dollar or fuel price today.”

He advised marketers to sell their old stock before adjusting prices for new goods based on current circumstances, urging them to be considerate to maintain the purchasing power of consumers.

Dogon Nama also highlighted that cleanliness and security in Kantin Kwari are top priorities for his administration. Addressing the nationwide protest, he assured that several security measures have been employed to protect goods in the market and called on marketers to support by safeguarding their merchandise.

“In Kantin Kwari, we have people employed to sweep the market from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with their uniforms clearly indicating their roles. Additionally, security personnel are employed to secure the properties of marketers 24/7,” Dogon Nama assured.

He appealed to marketers to have the fear of God in all their market dealings and to cooperate with the board when it comes to paying market dues for services rendered.

Dogon Nama expressed his appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the confidence and trust placed in him by entrusting him with the responsibility of managing the market. He assured that he would deliver beyond expectations for the economic development of Kano State.
