The only bridge linking Keana and Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State,Alasamu Bridge has been washed away as a result of heavy downpour which lasted for over ten hours
The heavy rainfall started on Friday morning and lasted until after one o’clock on Friday afternoon, left severely damaged after a torrential rainstorm hit the area over the weekend.
The bridge, which serves as a major link was washed away as commuters and goods between the two towns, are now partially impassable, creating a serious disruption for travelers and Local businesses.
According to eyewitnesses, the downpour, which lasted for several hours on Saturday, led to a sharp rise in water levels, weakening the structure of the bridge. Sections of the road have eroded, and large cracks have appeared, causing concern for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), in collaboration with Local authorities, are expected to mobilized and assess the damage and formulate a recovery plan.
“We are doing everything we can to ensure that alternative routes are put in place for commuters while a full evaluation of the bridge’s integrity is underway,”.
In the wake of the collapse, transporters have had to reroute their vehicles through smaller, often poorly maintained roads, which has further delayed travel and increased the risk of accidents.
Local residents have voiced their frustrations, pointing to the deteriorating state of roads in the area, which they say has been neglected for years by the Federal Government.
“We’ve been warning authorities about the poor State of this bridge for months. This disaster could have been avoided,” said a Local shopkeeper.
Some Keana residents are urging all travelers to avoid the Alasamu Bridge area until further notice and to use the identified detour routes.
Meanwhile, experts are assessing whether the damage can be repaired or if the bridge requires complete reconstruction.
The rains, which have continued sporadically in the area if persist, will create concerns about the stability of other roads linking Keana with Lafia.
