High Expectations As Kano LG Chairmen, Councillors Assume Office Today

By Abdullahi Yusuf

All the 44 newly-elected Local Government Chairmen and 484 Councillors in Kano State assumed duty today, having taken their Oath of Office.

Among them is a lone female, Sa’adatu Salisu, of Tudunwada Local Government.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had directed them to assume duty on Monday, shortly after they were sworn in at the Government House on Sunday.

Their assumption of office comes in the wake of high expectations from their respective constituents, especially as the local councils’ monthly grants will now be released to them directly from the Federation Account.

The Oath of Office was administered to them by the state Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Isa Dederi, amid thunderous ovations from members of the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party(NNPP) who thronged the Government House to witness the event.

The elected local government officials were sworn in shortly after they were presented with their Certificates of Return by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

Governor Yusuf in his address at the occasion, congratulated the newly-elected local council officials, describing their victory at the polls as “a milestone in the journey to consolidate democracy in the state.”

He also commended KANSIEC for conducting free, fair and peaceful elections, and expressed gratitude to the people of the state for participating in the elections in an orderly manner, describing their conduct as exemplary.

Recall that the ruling NNPP had on Saturday won all the 44 chairmanship positions and all the 484 councillorship seats contested for in the local government elections.

The Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission(KANSIEC),Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, who announced the results of the elections, said the exercise was “largely peaceful and successful in all ramifications.”

Malumfashi added that six political parties participated in the elections, namely AA, AAC, ACCORD, ADC, APM, and NNPP.

However, the two main opposition parties in the state, the APC and the PDP, did not partake in the polls.
