How NEDC Helps Yobe Government To Rebuild Basic Education
By Alhaji Yusuf, Damaturu
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is making significant strides in improving educational infrastructure and quality education across Yobe State, focusing on sustainable electricity, clean water, and teacher development.
In a targeted intervention coordinated with the Yobe State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through SUBEB, the NEDC has equipped numerous schools with solar-powered boreholes and solar streetlights.
The initiative prioritizes schools with high student enrollment to maximize impact.
The projects have been implemented in the state’s flagship Mega and Model Schools established by Governor Mai Mala Buni, including those in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, Geidam, Buni Yadi, and Nguru.
The intervention extends to many other primary and secondary schools across the state, such as Federal Science and Technical College Gashua, Government Girls Unity College Damaturu, and several community primary schools.
The provision of reliable clean water and solar lighting has brought immediate relief and joy to students, teachers and parents.
The streetlights enhance school security and aesthetics, creating a more conducive learning atmosphere.
Notably, constant water supply has improved sanitation and hygiene, particularly for female students, leading to a marked increase in student enrollment and attendance.
A teacher at Mega School Geidam, Suleiman Muhammed Jinjiri, attested to the change, saying,”this project has greatly improved attendance and learning outcomes.Water is now reliably available throughout the school, which has brought immense joy to everyone.”
Beyond infrastructure, the NEDC is investing in educators. This year, a teacher training programme focused on modern teaching methods and professional development and benefited approximately 1,200 Yobe teachers.
Mr. Jinjiri, one of the beneficiaries, confirmed that the training programme is already having a “visible and positive impact” in classrooms.
The commission has also distributed essential learning materials, including marker boards, school bags, and exercise books.
Furthermore, it has completed and handed over the new NEDC Mega School in Ari Kime, Potiskum, a modern facility symbolizing post-conflict recovery.
This multi-faceted effort demonstrates the NEDC’s strategic partnership with the Yobe State Government, working in a coordinated manner to sustainably address educational challenges.
Through this collaboration, the story of education in Yobe State continues to see tangible improvement.
