IHRC Calls for Urgent Action Against Lakurawa Sect Threat in Northwest Nigeria

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Nigeria Chapter has issued a call to action over the emergence of the Lakurawa sect, which is reportedly active in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.

The IHRC, dedicated to safeguarding human rights and promoting peace, highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated response to address the security challenges posed by the group.

According to the IHRC’s Country Director, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the Lakurawa sect has been recruiting young people, particularly those economically vulnerable, through social media and local networks.

The group’s activities, which include violent disruptions in affected communities, have created significant security and stability concerns, with impacts on local businesses and agricultural productivity.

The IHRC warned that the Lakurawa threat risks destabilizing the northwest region if left unchecked.

The commission is calling on the federal and state governments, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, and civil society to work together in tackling the issue.

Community engagement, youth empowerment, and increased security efforts are among the measures suggested to curb the group’s influence and restore order.

Emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions, Adamu stated, “The IHRC stands ready to support the government and work with local communities in promoting human rights and security. Only through coordinated and swift action can we overcome the challenges posed by Lakurawa and ensure a safe environment for all Nigerians.”

The IHRC reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a Nigeria where citizens feel secure and valued, urging policymakers and communities to unite in the effort to restore peace across Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.
