IHRC Condemns Plateau Massacre, Urges Swift Justice, Security Measures
The Nigerian Chapter of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) vehemently condemns the recent mass killing of over one hundred individuals in Plateau state, decrying it as an act of reprisal.
In a statement issued on Sunday by IHRC’s Country Director in Nigeria, Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the organization emphasized the sanctity of human life as the core of all rights.
Quoting Article 3 of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Bakoji emphasized that the right to life, liberty, and security is a fundamental entitlement that should never be violated without just cause.
“The IHRC vehemently opposes vigilante justice, considering it a blatant disregard for the rule of law” he said
The Country Director highlighted the tendency for people to take matters into their own hands due to authorities’ failure to address initial acts of aggression promptly. The organization urged for swift apprehension of culprits to ensure justice without unnecessary delays.
Emphasizing the need to prevent further violence, the IHRC urged the government to enforce law and order by instructing security agencies to collaborate effectively, share intelligence, and proactively quell potential security threats.
Furthermore, the IHRC called upon security agencies to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible for the Plateau massacre. They stressed the importance of gathering intelligence to prevent subsequent reprisal attacks that may endanger more innocent lives.
The IHRC affirmed its commitment to monitoring this and other human rights violations closely, particularly regarding the Tudun Biri incident in Igabi Local Government, Kaduna state, resulting from an ‘accidental’ bombing during a Maulud celebration.
