IHRC Nigeria Celebrates Human Rights Day With Innovative Activities

The Nigeria Chapter of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) celebrated this year’s World Human Rights Day with two unique activities focused on directly helping the underprivileged and raising their spirits.

On December 9th, a 10-member IHRC team led by Country Director Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu visited the Kurmawa Correctional Center in Kano City. They interacted with inmates, particularly focusing on those unlawfully detained, those awaiting trial for lengthy periods, and those imprisoned due to small debts.

The IHRC team promised to pursue justice for the unlawfully detained and expedite trials for those awaiting them. Additionally, they are exploring options to raise funds and help release those imprisoned for debts.

On December 10th, the IHRC team visited the Nassarawa Children’s Home, which cares for abandoned children. The Country Director thanked the staff for their dedication and explained the visit’s purpose: to interact with the children and distribute essential items.

After interacting with the staff, the team toured the Home and observed the excellent care provided to the children. They commended the officer-in-charge for her dedication and responsibility.

The IHRC team donated various items based on the officer’s recommendations, including toothpaste, sugar cane, detergents, sanitary pads, milk, fruits, and toiletries. The Country Director personally presented the gifts to the children.

Following the visit to the Children’s Home, the team met with respected elder statesman Alhaji Ado Muhammad, who was recovering from an illness. They briefed him on the World Human Rights Day activities, and he commended their efforts.
