IMS Pioneer Alumni Honour Academic Achievements of Lecturers at BUK

The 2020 pioneer alumni of the Department of Information and Media Studies (IMS), Bayero University, Kano (BUK), held a special recognition ceremony on Wednesday to honour the recent academic elevations of three esteemed lecturers of the Department.

The event which took place at the department’s boardroom and brought together staff and graduates in a show of gratitude and mutual respect.

Led by Mustapha Salisu Yakubu, Secretary of the IMS Pioneer Alumni, the group celebrated the promotion of Professor Nura Ibrahim to the rank of Professor of Media Studies, and the elevation of Associate Professor Rukayya Yusuf Aliyu and Associate Professor Hassan Ya’u for their outstanding academic contributions.

In his remarks, Mustapha praised the honourees for their dedication, mentorship, and enduring impact on the academic and personal growth of students. “Professor Nura Ibrahim’s elevation is a testament to decades of academic excellence, visionary leadership, and continuous commitment to scholarship,” he said.

He also lauded Associate Professors Rukayya Yusuf and Hassan Ya’u for their scholarly rigour and commitment to upholding high standards in media education.

Speaking on behalf of IMS Department, Professor Nura Ibrahim, who also serves as the Head of the Department, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the gesture. He described the visit and honour as emotionally moving, noting that the alumni’s thoughtfulness reaffirmed the positive impact of the department’s academic efforts.

Professor Ibrahim extended an invitation to the alumni to return and share their professional experiences with current students, stating that the department is open to collaborations that enrich academic learning with real-world insights.

Other lecturers of the Department also expressed their appreciation during the event including Dr. Saminu Umar, who called the alumni’s visit a rare and meaningful gesture. “This is when you can truly measure whether a student is sincerely grateful,” he remarked, commending the group for their heartfelt words and thoughtful gifts.

On his part, Mallam Muktar Magaji, another lecturer, emphasized the value of maintaining strong bonds post-graduation. He encouraged the alumni to support one another, uphold professional excellence, and continue lifelong learning. He also cited positive feedback from industry stakeholders on the performance of IMS students during internships, stating, “You are our ambassadors, and we are truly proud of the excellence you represent.”

Highlights of the event includes; the alumni presented symbolic tokens of appreciation to the honourees and described their academic journeys as deeply influenced by the dedication and selflessness of these lecturers.

Also, the HOD and other Staff took the representative for an inspection of the newly established IMS Digital Studio, currently under construction, revealing a transformative initiative aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice for students. It is designed to serve as a hub of innovation and creativity, the studio promises state-of-the-art equipment and a dynamic learning environment where students can gain hands-on experience in digital media production, broadcasting, and content creation.
