Inadequate Power Generation, Non-payment of Electricity Bills, Vandalization Responsible for Power Shortage – KEDCO
By Mustapha Salisu
The Management of Kano Electricity Distribution Plc. (KEDCO) has disclosed that the current power outage issues result from inadequate power generation due to gas constraints, leading to low load allocation to KEDCO for distribution.
Mr. Abubakar Yusuf, the Managing Director of KEDCO, made this revelation during a press briefing at the company’s headquarters in Kano on Tuesday.
Yusuf clarified that KEDCO relies on the power generated and allocated for distribution. Over the past three months, the company has received an average of 180 megawatts, significantly below the required average of 300 megawatts to adequately supply customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa.
Highlighting the nationwide nature of the issue, Yusuf mentioned ongoing engagements by the Honourable Minister of Power and other stakeholders to address the situation.
The Managing Director expressed concern about the increasing incidents of vandalization, averaging three cases daily, affecting the company’s ability to provide effective services. Despite collaborating with security agencies, KEDCO appealed to customers to assist in safeguarding essential infrastructure.
Non-payment of electricity bills and energy theft by some customers also emerged as significant challenges hindering the company’s ability to meet financial obligations and purchase sufficient electricity.
Yusuf noted the impact of the March 10th, 2024 fire outbreak at Dan’agundi Transmission Station, temporarily affecting power supply to major areas in Kano. He acknowledged the efforts of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in resolving the situation promptly.
Addressing future plans, Mr. Abubakar mentioned that KEDCO’s core investor, Future Energies Africa, plans to build up to 200 megawatts of incremental capacity through minigrids and embedded generations.
“One example is the 1-megawatt Zawaciki/Gida Dubu power plant, providing residents with 18-20 hours of power supply” The MD revealed.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Abubakar assured customers that KEDCO is actively engaging with stakeholders to enhance power supply across its franchise.
