INEC Resumes Voter Registration Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Hajara Abdullahi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed voter registration nationwide, marking the commencement of the second phase of the exercise, Punch reports.

This development was confirmed on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola.

According to the commission, the online pre-registration exercise was launched on August 18, 2025, while the physical registration began on August 25, 2025, and officially ended on December 10, 2025.

In a statement issued in December 2025, INEC revealed that 9,891,801 Nigerians registered during the online pre-registration phase. It further disclosed that 2,572,054 citizens had successfully completed their registration as of November 28, 2025.

This includes 1,503,832 Nigerians who completed their registration online and 1,068,222 who did so through physical enrollment.

Explaining the interval between the two phases, the commission said the period was used to carry out statutory activities mandated by law, including the display of the voters’ register for claims and objections.

“In accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the display of the register of voters for claims and objections was conducted from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government area offices where the CVR exercise took place,” the commission stated.

INEC urged eligible citizens who have not registered to seize this opportunity, adding that the transfer of voting locations and updates of personal details are also available during the exercise.

The commission further encouraged those who registered during the first phase to verify their details and check the voters’ register to ensure there are no errors or the inclusion of deceased or ineligible voters.

However, INEC clarified that continuous voter registration in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Anambra State has been temporarily suspended due to ongoing electoral activities in both locations. It added that new dates for resumption would be announced in due course.
