Islamic Council Slams Plateau Gov’t Over Inaction on Killings

From Abdullahi Alhassan, Kaduna

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, Kaduna State chapter, has strongly condemned the recent killing of 12 innocent travelers in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack, which occurred on June 21, 2025, left many others with serious injuries.

In a statement signed by the Council’s Kaduna State Secretary, Engineer AbdurRahman Hassan, the group decried the brutal attack as a “heinous, inhuman, and uncivilized act of barbarism” perpetrated against law‑abiding travelers from Kaduna State.

The statement pointed out that Plateau State has long been a flashpoint for ethnic and religious violence, especially targeting Muslims.

“The atrocities committed against Muslim travelers in Plateau State have become one too many. The Du Pond tragedy, where countless Muslims were ambushed and killed, is still fresh in our memories, as is the murder of Major General Idris Alkali (Rtd),” the statement read.

The Council called on the Plateau State Government to take decisive action to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice, stressing that these barbaric acts must be stopped and should no longer be tolerated.

“We hope this attack will not be treated like those before it. The Plateau State Government must fish out the criminals and deal with them decisively to serve as a deterrent to others.”

The statement commended the Kaduna State Government for its swift condemnation of the attack, urging it to consider going beyond issuing a statement.

“Even if it means pursuing litigation against the Plateau State Government, it should do so to secure ‘diyyah’ payments for the families of the deceased and compensation for those injured,” the statement added.

The Council emphasized the urgent need for the Plateau State Government to address the root causes of the ongoing conflict and ensure that justice is served.

“Only through sustained efforts by both governmental and non‑governmental actors can lasting peace be achieved in the troubled area of Plateau State,” the statement said.

The statement concluded with a call for Kaduna State residents to remain law‑abiding and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The Council offered prayers for the repose of the departed victims’ souls and a quick recovery for those injured.
