IWD 2025: Amnesty International Leads Jigawa Rally Against Gender Inequality, Femicide
By Mustapha Salisu
As part of efforts to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, Amnesty International Nigeria volunteers organized a walk rally on Saturday, March 8, 2025, in Hadejia, Jigawa State.
Speaking to newsmen, Salisu M. Indabawa, the Jigawa State Coordinator of Amnesty International Volunteers/Supporters, stated that the event aimed to highlight gender inequality and the rising femicide crisis.
He disclosed approximately 55 participants marched from Gandun Sarki to Hadejia-Nguru Roundabout to raise awareness on the issue.
Indabawa noted that Nigeria recorded 17 femicide cases in January 2025 alone, representing a 240% increase from the previous year.
He attributed this alarming rise to the absence of specific femicide laws, which contributes to underreporting and inadequate legal responses.
The Coordinator further stressed the need for legislative reforms, public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and stronger support systems for victims.
According to Indabawa, the rally successfully raised awareness on femicide and gender equality in Hadejia.
He emphasized that addressing identified challenges and implementing key recommendations will further strengthen future advocacy efforts and community engagement.
PRIME TIME NEWS gathered that community leaders, youth groups, and traditional entertainers supported the cause, amplifying its impact.
Notable speakers at the event, Dr. Usman Dalhat and Muhammad Ibrahim Adam, urged youths to remain steadfast in protecting and promoting women’s rights at all times.
