Jega Rates North-Eastern University as Benchmark for Private Varsities

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, has described North-Eastern University (NEU), Gombe, as a benchmark for quality private university education in Nigeria, urging other private institutions to emulate its model of academic excellence, infrastructure and research-driven development.
Prof. Jega made the remark on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the institution, where he was received by the Founder and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Sani Jauro; Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yusuph Amuda Yahaya; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sani Isyaka; Registrar, Hajara Abubakar; and other senior management staff.
He said he was impressed by the University’s serene learning environment, its investment in modern facilities and its commitment to building an institution driven by quality rather than commercial interests.
“What I have seen at North-Eastern University is remarkable. This institution reflects purpose, vision and dedication to high standards. In a time when many private universities focus more on profit than quality, NEU stands out as an example built on substance and strong moral foundations,” he said.
Prof. Jega noted that Nigeria’s higher education system needs more universities that prioritise strong academic delivery, practical training, effective governance and research-led development. He said NEU’s approach demonstrates what private institutions can achieve with the right vision and commitment.
During a guided tour led by the Founder, the former INEC boss visited key facilities including the Centre for African Medicinal Plant Research (CAMPRE), which he described as a world-class scientific centre and an uncommon investment among private universities in the country. He also toured the Anas Aremeyaw Anas Multimedia, Content Creation & Innovation Centre, where he held an interview in the University’s modern TV studio.
“The level of investment and innovation here is impressive. I hope the University sustains this momentum and continues to produce graduates who are academically solid and practically equipped,” he added.
Earlier, Dr. Jauro expressed appreciation for the visit and reiterated the University’s commitment to high academic standards, moral discipline and research capacity. On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya, said the commendation from Prof. Jega reinforces NEU’s drive to maintain excellence and build a university that meets global expectations.
