The Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, has pledged to work with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to enroll 8,000 out-of-school children in his constituency.
Dangyatin made this commitment during the launch of an enrollment drive campaign held at Sabuwar Dalam Primary School in Miga Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
He explained that the initiative followed an agreement between state lawmakers and UNICEF during a meeting in Kaduna, where UNICEF presented findings on the out-of-school children data in Jigawa.
“Our commitment to enrolling 8,000 out-of-school children in my constituency begins today with 300 children from Sabuwar Dalam village. We are adopting strategies such as a massive sensitization campaign on the importance of education, providing basic learning materials like uniforms, school bags, and exercise books, and improving the learning environment,” Dangyatin said.
The Speaker added that lawmakers from the state assembly agreed to enroll 40 percent of the total out-of-school children in Jigawa and have already begun implementing these strategies.
He commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for supporting the assembly’s efforts and urged parents, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to contribute to the campaign for the state’s future development.
Representing the Governor at the event, Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, praised the initiative and called on stakeholders to support the drive. He noted that the campaign aligns with the administration’s 12-point agenda, which prioritizes education.
Malam Bala Ibrahim highlighted several achievements under Governor Namadi’s administration, including the recruitment of 6,000 teachers, allocation of 32 percent of the state’s budget to education, and the creation of a Ministry of Basic Education within one year of assuming office.
