JISEPA Seizes Expired Consumables Worth N14.4m in Jigawa

From Mika’il Tsoho, Dutse

The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has seized and condemned expired, contaminated, and improperly stored consumables and items valued at N14,447,650 during a statewide inspection exercise.

Managing Director of the Agency, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the agency’s sanitary inspection campaign carried out across all 27 local government areas of the state.

He explained that the inspection covered the first and second quarters of 2025 (January to June) and targeted markets, shops, stores, and other commercial outlets. The exercise aimed to enforce sanitary standards and identify products unfit for human use and consumption.

“The operation was legally guided by Section 5(1)(2) of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Law 2009 (as amended), and Section 125(1) of the Jigawa State Public Health Security Law 2024,” he said.

Sabo added that the seized items were condemned after following due legal and procedural processes, including verification, documentation, and formal approval for destruction, in line with relevant public health laws.

“This action is not punitive, but preventive — intended to safeguard the health and safety of our citizens and to maintain the environmental and sanitary standards of our state,” he stressed.

He also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to working closely with market associations, business owners, and community leaders to ensure full compliance with environmental and public health regulations.

The Managing Director further urged the public to remain vigilant, support sanitation enforcement efforts, and report any unsanitary or illegal sales practices.

“Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more responsible Jigawa State,” he concluded.
