JUST IN: Court of Appeal Overturns Federal High Court Judgement on Local Government Elections in Kano

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has overturned the ruling of the Federal High Court in Kano regarding the local government elections in the state, stating that the federal court lacked the jurisdiction to hear a case related to the conduct of elections.

Initially, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some faction of NNPP had filed a suit before the Federal High Court seeking to stop the elections, alleging that the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission had ties with the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

However, in the judgment delivered by Justice Oyewumi, it was declared that the Federal High Court had exceeded its jurisdiction by entertaining and ruling on the matter. Consequently, the Court of Appeal upheld the appeal filed by the Kano State Government and nullified the decision of the lower court.

This ruling means that the local government elections held in the state remain legally valid.
