Just In:Disagreement Breaks Out In Kano APC Over Selection Of Deputy Governorship Candidate
By Our Reporter
Following moves by the Kano State House of Assembly to impeach the Deputy Governor of the State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, disagreements have broken out among the stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in the state over the selection of his successor.
Political observers believe that the disagreements over the selection of Comrade Gwarzo’s replacement may generate disunity among members of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Presently, three candidates are being mentioned to succeed the incumbent Deputy Governor whom are being proposed by different interest groups in the party.
They include Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, who is the incumbent Speaker of the State House of Assembly, and is believed to be enjoying the backing of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Falgore’s supporters believe that being among the APC major stakeholders in the state, the Speaker is the right candidate for the position,as he will foster unity among all members of the party.
Another choice is a former Commissioner for Local Government,Hon. Murtala Sule Garo, who is believed to be enjoying the backing of a group led by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Hon.Garo is seen as a very formidable force within the ranks of APC’s founding stakeholders and his supporters argue that he has the capacity to occupy the exalted post and strengthen the party’s position in the state.
Another hopeful is Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, who is reportedly enjoying the prompting of the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin.Takai too, has huge support, especially within the Barau Jibrin camp.
However, political affairs analysts argue that there is a huge rivalry between the Senator Barau Jibrin camp and the Murtala Sule Garo group, which could cause intense crisis within the ruling party.
The analysts posit that favouring any of the contenders for the Deputy Governorship slot could breed disunity that might result in anti-party activities among members.
On the other hand, the observers believe that if Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf selects Speaker Falgore for the post, there is the likelihood that some major APC stakeholders could abstain from participating in the party’s electioneering campaigns.
According to the analysts, some of the party’s stalwarts believe that they have more followers than Governor Yusuf and as such,it would not be fair to favour one group over the other.
Furthermore, the Senator representing Kano South, Abdulrahaman Kawu Sumaila, alongside some members of the House of Representatives from the zone, feel that it is the turn of the area to produce the state Deputy Governor.
The lawmakers argue that both Kano Central and Kano North senatorial districts have been taking leadership positions in the state, over the years, and as such,it is time for Kano South to have a shot at the deputy governorship.
They, therefore, propose Rt. Hon. Alhassan Rurum for the position, hoping that his choice would douse the controversy and ensure fairness for all the three senatorial zones.
The analyts finally submit that unless the deputy governorship selection is resolved amicably, the issue might snowball into a full-blown internal crisis in the APC that could adversely affect the party’s chances in the forthcoming elections.
