KACRAN hails Tinubu’s reappointment of NEDC governing board

Kulen Allah Cattles Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has expressed deep appreciation to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for the reappointment of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) governing board members.

In a press statement by the National President of KACRAN, Khalid Muhammad Bello, the move was hailed as a crucial step in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

The statement emphasized the dire situation faced by the North East region of Nigeria, which has been severely affected by the devastating activities of Boko Haram insurgency, cattle rustling, and other forms of illegal acts.

Thousands of innocent lives have been lost, and properties, including houses, schools, places of worship, farms, shops, and livestock worth billions, have been destroyed. The violence has displaced thousands of people, leaving them without their means of livelihood and ancestral lands.

In 2017, former President Muhammadu Buhari established the NEDC with a mandate to undertake various responsibilities, including the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), provision of palliatives, reconstruction of schools and houses, construction of roads and bridges, and measures to rebuild the regional economy and living standards.

KACRAN praised the NEDC for its effective response to the crisis, providing essential services such as portable drinking water to herders and supporting security agents with necessary equipment to reduce insurgency levels.

However, the United Nations reported that over four million people in the North East were at risk of severe hunger in 2023 and beyond, necessitating the immediate reappointment of the Commission’s Management Board.

The removal of oil subsidies exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in the North East region, further highlighting the importance of the NEDC’s functions in the area.

KACRAN appealed to the National Assembly to swiftly confirm the reappointed members of the NEDC governing board, acknowledging their previous dedication and commitment to the region’s development.

The association also urged President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to involve the NEDC in introducing palliative measures to alleviate the suffering caused by the oil subsidy removal.

KACRAN also called on the newly appointed NEDC Governing Board to take immediate action upon ratification, as the region’s people rely on their efforts to save lives and address the pressing humanitarian crisis.
