By Mustapha Salisu

The residents of Tudun Murtala Tagarji community in Kano State woke up to the sight of a newborn baby abandoned in a carton.

At around 2 a.m. on Saturday, near the Kaura drainage in Tudun Murtala Tagarji, the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, led by Commander Sulaiman Rabiu, came across this shocking incident while carrying out their patrol.

Narrating the incident to Ibrahim Makama, a journalist in Kano, Commander Sulaiman explained:

“Yesterday around 2 A.M., while we were out on patrol, we came across a shocking incident inside a pit very close to us. Upon close observation, we noticed a disposed carton, but we had no idea what was inside it,” he said.

Sulaiman continued: “In order to clear our doubt and be sure nothing harmful was kept there, I instructed my boys to open the carton, and behold, upon opening it, we saw a baby already dead.”

“We took the baby to our office. By morning, we invited the ward head to come and see for himself, along with other members of the community, before conveying the baby to the police station and informing them,” he added.

“In turn, the police referred us to the hospital for an examination of the baby’s status, where they confirmed the baby was dead. We came back home and organized burial rites for the baby in accordance with Islamic teachings,” the commander disclosed.

Commander Sulaiman called on vigilante groups to remain committed to providing maximum security to their host communities. He also urged parents to advise their children, especially young women, to understand that unwanted pregnancy goes against Islamic teachings and to monitor their movements, including guidance from traditional leaders.
