The Commissioner of Police in Kano State,Usaini Gumel, says the Police Command under his watch has arrested and prosecuted more than 3,000 criminals for various offences in the last one year.
The offences, Gumel said, included kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, human trafficking, illicit drug dealings and thuggery.
He listed the achievements during an interactive session with newsmen as part of activities marking his one year in office on Thursday.
Within the period, he said, the command had also received and profiled a total of 623 repentant thugs, whom are currently engaged by the State Government in various life-changing empowerment programmes.
According to the commissioner, the command had also in the last one year, flushed out criminals who occupied the historic Dala Hill and used it as a hideout and enclave from where they launched mayhem and various criminal activities against the people of the state.
By so doing,he said, the criminals had not only attempted to destroy a major symbol of Kano’s history – Dala Hill, but almost destroyed a world-class tourist attraction, a source of wealth creation, and revenue generation in the state.
“Thus far, the intervention of the Police Command has made the historic site safe and secure for all residents of the area, visitors, and the people of Kano State,” he said.
Under the Inspector General of Police Safe Schools Initiative aimed at improving the security of lives and property, especially the safety of schools and students, Gumel said, the command launched the School Protection Squad (SPS) to provide adequate security extended to all schools across the State, especially along borders with other states.
“The SPS, comprised of sixty (60) personnel, was provided with the tools for the task and dispatched to intensify and establish robust patrols around all primary and secondary schools, and tertiary institutions across each senatorial district in the state,” he said.
“All thanks and glory are due to Allah (SWT) for granting me the opportunity to stand before you today in commemoration of my first anniversary since assuming office on 2nd May 2024 as the Command’s Commissioner of Police, to reflect on our success story and challenges.
“I must confess that it has been a privileged opportunity given to me by the Inspector General of Police, through which I am serving the community with enormous cooperation from the good people of the State, towards ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
“As the 45th Commissioner of Police of the Command, communities in the State have had their fair share of security challenges, especially the menace of daylight and night time mobile phone armed robbery, thuggery (Daba), farmers and herders clashes, and other violent criminal activities.
“Other heinous crimes include kidnapping, the threat of infiltration of bandits along border LGAs, especially Falgore and Danshoshiya forests, buying and selling of minors, motor vehicle theft, cross-border organized crimes, and illicit drug dealings, among others.
“In compliance with the directive and vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to all Police Commands and Formations to implement various problem-solving initiatives such as the Community Policing approach to tackle emerging community crimes, the Police Command in Kano took the bull by the horn.
“After reviewing the crime pattern and conducting crime mapping of the State, we drew up an action plan centered around robust community policing engagements with relevant stakeholders, synergizing with the military and other security agencies, and using both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches.
“Through collective efforts, we succeeded in fighting and bringing down the wave of crime and criminality in the State.” the commissioner added.
