Kano: Embrace photography as career – KAVASS to youth
By Mubarak Nasir Abdallahi
The Kano Visual Artists Association (KAVASS) has called on the youth of Kano to consider photography as a viable and lucrative career option.
This appeal was made on Monday during the celebration of World Photography Day on August 19, held at Northwest University, Kano.
Speaking at the event, KAVASS Secretary-General, Muhammad Sani Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of photography in today’s world and urged young people to explore it as a profession.
“Photography is more than just a hobby; it is a lucrative business that can provide a stable income,” Ibrahim stated.
He encouraged youths to seize the opportunities within the industry rather than depending on government jobs, which are often scarce.
KAVASS Vice Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Tubeless, also addressed the gathering, stressing the significance of photography and the recognition it brings.
“Joining KAVASS gives you a sense of belonging and recognition in the eyes of the world,” Nasir said, urging youths to take photography seriously.
He particularly encouraged female photographers to be proactive and assert their presence in the field.
As part of his commitment to supporting young photographers, Nasir sponsored the membership fees for ten aspiring female photographers, allowing them to join the association at no cost.
The event, which saw the participation of over 200 photographers—a record number for Kano—was filled with celebration and camaraderie, marking a significant milestone for the local photography community.
