Kano Government Moves to Address Rising Concern Over Return of Achaba Operations

The Kano State Government has assured residents that it is taking decisive steps to address growing public concern over the resurgence of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Achaba, across parts of the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the government acknowledged widespread reports confirming the increasing presence of Achaba operators in several communities within Kano metropolis, despite the long-standing ban on the practice. Intelligence reports, according to the government, have also revealed that some border and neighbouring communities are witnessing a similar rise in such activities.

Authorities further disclosed that they have received alerts about unidentified individuals infiltrating communities while operating motorcycles under the guise of commercial transportation.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the state government said it has begun implementing security measures across all 44 Local Government Areas to curb the resurgence.

The statement added that security agencies in the state are fully briefed and actively working to address the situation, with the government pledging additional support where necessary to ensure effective operations.

Kano residents had earlier suggested increased surveillance at entry and exit points of the state to monitor movements linked to Achaba activities. The government confirmed that these recommendations are under review as part of an ongoing security assessment.

Expressing appreciation to the public for their vigilance and cooperation, the government encouraged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious movements to relevant authorities.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, according to the statement, remains committed to restoring full security and stability across the state, working closely with local government councils, traditional institutions, community leaders, and security agencies.

The press release was signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs on November 30, 2025.
