Kano Government to Hold Ramadan Trade Fair to Reduce Prices

The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the leadership of major markets, has finalized plans to organize a Ramadan trade fair aimed at reducing the prices of essential commodities.
The Chairman of the Singer Market Development Association (SIMDA), Junaidu Muhammad Zakari, told reporters in Kano that the three-week-long fair will attract merchants from major markets, including Singer, Dawanau, Kanti Kwari, Yan Lemu, Yankaba, and Sabon Gari.
According to Zakari, the initiative is designed to make essential goods more affordable for residents during the holy month of Ramadan.
“By partnering with major markets, the state government aims to create a platform that will not only benefit consumers but also support local businesses and traders,” he said.
He emphasized that the state government’s collaboration with market leaders underscores its commitment to strengthening the local economy and ensuring residents have access to affordable necessities during Ramadan.
Zakari further disclosed that the Ministry of Trade and Commerce has pledged to provide the necessary logistics to ensure the smooth execution of the fair. The trade fair is set to commence a week before the start of Ramadan and will run for 20 days.
Speaking on price trends, Zakari noted that while the cost of many essential commodities has decreased, sugar prices remain high. He called on major producers such as Dangote and BUA to lower sugar prices ahead of Ramadan.
“We are not happy with the current price of sugar. There is no justification for its continued high cost, especially since it is produced locally. The exchange rate has also stabilized, with the naira gaining relative strength against the dollar,” he said.
Zakari urged sugar manufacturers to reduce prices to ease the financial burden on consumers as the fasting season approaches.
