Kano: Governor Yusuf declares 24-hour curfew
In response to the recent escalation of violence during protests, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared a 24-hour curfew across Kano State, effective immediately.
This decision was announced in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Thursday.
According to the statement, the governor revealed this following an Emergency State Security Council meeting.
Governor Yusuf addressed the need to restore order and prevent further chaos.
“The imposition of this curfew is a necessary measure to restore order and ensure the safety of our communities,” he stated.
The decision to implement the curfew came after a peaceful protest on July 31, 2024, turned violent when it was hijacked by thugs and hoodlums, resulting in looting, property destruction, and violence against innocent citizens.
Governor Yusuf had previously convened a town hall meeting with various stakeholders, including religious leaders, business representatives, traditional leaders, academia, technocrats, youth and women’s groups, and civil society organizations.
During the meeting, he acknowledged the constitutional right to peaceful protest and assured that the grievances of the demonstrators would be forwarded to the President and Commander in Chief.
“The representatives of the peaceful protesters submitted their demands in writing this morning, which I have pledged to deliver to the President,” the governor stated.
While commending the majority of demonstrators for voicing their concerns responsibly, he expressed disappointment over the actions of those who hijacked the protest for violent purposes.
“Such actions, fueled by antagonistic elements, threaten the safety and security of all citizens and must be addressed vigorously,” he added.
“It is paramount that we protect our citizens from further harm and preserve the sanctity of our state’s institutions and businesses,” Governor Yusuf said.
“Let us not allow the actions of a few selfish individuals to divide us. Together, we can navigate these challenges and fortify our resolve to build a stronger, more resilient Kano State.”
He urged all security agencies in the state to ensure full compliance with the curfew, and urged citizens to adhere to this directive for their safety and the well-being of all.
