Kano Govt Approves Over ₦51.5 Billion for Infrastructure, Education, and Public Welfare Projects

The Kano State Executive Council, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a total expenditure of ₦51.57 billion for the execution of major development projects and public welfare programs across the state.

The approvals came during the 27th Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday, April 28, 2025 (29th Shawwal, 1446 AH).

The council’s decisions reflect a strategic focus on infrastructure, education, public service delivery, and climate resilience, with funds allocated to various ministries and departments.

Key highlights include:

Science and Technology: ₦185.16 million was approved for fiber optic installation and bandwidth subscription for 2023–2025.

Environmental Protection: ₦11 million was set aside to settle 11 months of outstanding allowances for 100 forest guards. The Council also approved a 100% upward review of their monthly stipends.

Education Sector: ₦327.78 million was allocated for liabilities within the sector, while ₦1.21 billion will go toward upgrading the School for Islamic Studies in Dawakin Tofa, Tofa, and Ungogo LGAs.

Infrastructure and Urban Development:

₦3.47 billion was approved for solar-powered traffic lights across Kano metropolis.

₦5.49 billion will be used to rehabilitate key roads including Gidan Mallam Aminu Kano to Sharada Road.

₦274.77 million was set aside for a perimeter wall at the Government House.

Public Utilities and Services: ₦1.7 billion was approved to cover power supply costs for Greater Kano Works and Water Board Headquarters from January to March 2025.

Fire and Safety: ₦240.5 million was allocated for procuring fire service vehicles for the Government House.

Religious and Cultural Projects: ₦115.96 million and ₦303.4 million were approved for renovation and construction of Juma’at mosques in Amana City and Rijiyar Gwangwan respectively.

In the area of public welfare, the Council approved a landmark ₦15.67 billion to settle severance gratuity and allowances of former councillors who served from 2014 to 2024. Additionally, ₦5.39 billion was earmarked for continuing foreign scholarships and launching a domestic scholarship program.

Governor Yusuf also received recognition from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) for advancements in healthcare in the state. The Council noted that the national NMA will confer its highest fellowship award on the Governor during a ceremony in Katsina on April 29, 2025.

Other significant developments include the presentation of the Kano State Transportation Policy Document to the Governor and the participation of state delegates in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Peer Learning Program on Artificial Intelligence held in Singapore.

Speaking after the meeting, the Council Chair reiterated the administration’s resolve to tackle water scarcity and commended citizens for their patience.

The latest decisions underscore the Kano State Government’s commitment to good governance, inclusive growth, and sustainable development across all sectors.
